In Matthew 19:14, Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” To that end, 2019 marks the fifth consecutive year that MAG has hosted VBS in remote Honduras. Bringing a focused children’s ministry to the region around MAG’s Honduras base has become a yearly endeavor for MAG missionary, Carmen Garrigan. This year, Sean and Carmen were joined by their friends Jack and Jenn McComas from Dayton, Ohio. The McComas are founders and directors of the Dayton Student House of Prayer (SHOP) and were a huge asset to the 2019 Honduras VBS team.
For six days, this year’s VBS team served the children of Rus Rus and Suhi with powerful lessons about God’s great love. The theme verse for this year was John 10:14 “I am the Good Shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” Jenn helped to spearhead the teaching, and she focused on helping the children understand God’s word through 4 points of prayer:
1. Start your heart
2. Look to See
3. Stop and listen
4. Agree with me
The children enjoyed sound Biblical teaching followed by activities, crafts, and lots of outside play time. One of the primary focuses this year was to include, train, and equip local teenagers to be a part of the ministry team. Much time was spent preparing them to lead small groups. Carmen reflected, “It was so precious to spend time with our cohort of teen girls each afternoon and help them grow in their prayer lives and ministry skills.”
Evidence of that growth was seen when two of the teenage girls decided to be baptized in the Rus Rus River. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
